Amidst ‘rift’, Ambode asks: who am I to speak after Tinubu

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, at an event on Monday has asked if he was ‘qualified’ to speak after his predecessor and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu had addressed the audience.

It was in the news last week that Tinubu, the de facto political godfather of Lagos, had given his blessing to a former commissioner of the state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, instead of Ambode, who he helped make governor in 2015.

Though Ambode has denied any rift with Tinubu, many acolytes of Tinubu including local councils’ chairmen have already pledged their support for Sanwo-Olu, who will be competing against Ambode for the party’s ticket.

Both Tinubu and his ‘enstranged’ were sighted at launch of “Africa Rise and Shine”, a book by Jim Ovia, chairman of Zenith Bank. At the event in Lagos, Ambode sent the audience reeling with laughter while acknowledging Tinubu.

Ambode, when invited to the podium to speak at the event which had many governors and traditional rulers in attendance said: “Actually, I didn’t prepare to come and say anything here… And who am I to speak after the Jagaban has spoken?”

This drew laughter from the audience. Ambode had been invited to speak immediately after the former governor of Lagos State.

When the laughter subsided, the governor went on to shower praises on Ovia, saying of the Zenith Bank Plc founder: “the truth is, there is no person that has actually gone through the profession of accountancy that would not have had anything to do with Uncle Jim, and that is the truth.”
