Benue state belongs to Fulani – Prof. Labdo

A lecturer in the Faculty of Humanities, Maitama Sule University, Kano, Prof. Umar Muhammad Labdo has reiterated his earlier claim on Facebook that Benue state is a Fulani domain and not for Tivs, whose background he traced to Fulani and Jukun.

Speaking on the origin of the Tiv nation, he said their founding father was a Fulani named Mohammed Alla, who migrated from Katsina to that area and got married to a Jukun woman.

The academic maintained that Alla through the Jukun woman fathered the Tiv people, stressing that it was because the former came from Katsina to settle among his people already in that area that there is a town called Katsina Alla in Benue state today.

Labdo, who spoke in an interview with the Punch, also claimed that history has it that the present day Benue state started from Bauchi Emirate and Adamawa emirates.

His words, “We submit that the first father of the Tiv was Mohammed Alla, who migrated from Katsina, that is why today, you have Katsina Alla! Let them explain, what is the meaning of Katsina Alla? So, this Fulani man, when he got to that area and fathered Tiv, there were other Fulani people there. That was why he came to join his own brothers. So, if you are talking about any original owners of the Tiv land, it is actually the Fulani. And the Fulani are the fathers of the Tiv and the Jukun are their mothers.”
