Court finds ex-Plateau governor, Dariye guilty of misappropriating N1.16bn

A Federal Capital Territory, FCT High Court in Gudu, Abuja has found a former governor of Plateau state, Senator Joshua Dariye guilty of misappropriating N1.16 billion Ecological Fund meant for the state.

The trial judge, Justice Adebukola Banjoko also found the senator guilty of criminal breach of trust as regards N250 million issued to Pinnacle Communications emanating from the state’s Ecological Fund.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had arraigned Dariye on a 21-count charge for the alleged offence shortly after the expiration of his tenure in May 2007.

According to the anti-graft agency, the defendant used his office to siphon money out of the country, through various accounts. Although the defence lawyer, Kanu Agabi, questioned the authenticity of evidence adduced by the prosecution against his client, the court said the evidences clearly indicate a case of diversion.

In counts 1, 2, 4, and 7 which relate to the diversion of N80 million to the PDP, N100 million to a company, Marine flow and other sums through the All State Bank, the judge found the former governor guilty of diverting funds to the Peoples Democratic Party in the state among other groups.
