Elections: Fire in INEC Anambra office razes 4,695 card readers

Barely four days to the Presidential and National Assembly elections, fire on Tuesday gutted a section of the Anambra State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Awka, the state capital, Tuesday, destroying two containers housing 4,695 smart card readers.

Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, who disclosed this in a statement, expressed concern about fire incidents but vowed that the incidents would not affect the polls.

He also disclosed that INEC would mop up some card readers from neighbouring states for Anambra.

Speaking earlier, the INEC REC, in Anambra, Dr Nkwachukwu Orji, said he was yet to ascertain the extent of damage.

He stated that the sensitive materials affected were smart card readers meant for the general elections.

“I don’t have the details of how the fire started; all I know is that there was a fire incident involving the containers that house some of our sensitive materials.

“We have to do an assessment before we can ascertain the extent of damage, we have been storing equipments in that facility since 2011,” Orji said.
