Elections: Suspected thugs destroy INEC office, card readers with explosives in Akwa Ibom

Part of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, office in Ibesikpo-Asutan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has been destroyed with the use of explosives by suspected thugs in the wee hours of Friday.

Over 160 card readers out of 190 provided for the area were said to be burnt alongside 12 brand-new generating sets, computer sets and other office equipment.

The Electoral Officer, Mr. Victor Inyang, confirmed to some reporters that “no ballot paper was destroyed by the fire. They thought the election materials were kept in the store. So, they went there first.”

INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mr Mike Igini, also confirmed that sensitive materials meant for the conduct of the election on Saturday were not destroyed.

Igini, who had earlier inspected the extent of damage, assured that elections would go on unhindered in the local government area.

“Some materials were burnt, but no sensitive material was affected even though they used explosives to destroy the building, elections will hold in the area,” he said.
