Seven-time European champions, AC Milan, said on Monday announced the sack of coach Vincenzo Montella and named combative former player Gennaro Gattuso as their new boss.
A goalless draw at home to Torino on Sunday proved to be the final straw and the former Sampdoria and Fiorentina boss was dismissed on Monday with the Rossoneri in seventh place. They are currently lying seventh in Serie A.
Thirty-nine-year-old Gattuso made more than 450 appearances for AC Milan between 1999 and 2012, winning a reputation as a rugged defensive midfielder.
He spent a season at Glasgow Rangers before that, and has been working within the AC Milan structure as youth team coach.
A club statement read, “Milan announce the dismissal of Vincenzo Montella as head coach of the first team.
“The technical operation is entrusted to Gennaro Gattuso, who leaves his post as Primavera Coach and to whom we send the warmest wishes.”
