Despite an impressive performance by Nigeria’s senior men team which saw them through the 2018 World Cup qualifiers undefeated, the Super Eagles dropped nine places in the latest FIFA ranking released on Thursday to become 50th in the world and 8th in Africa.
In the penultimate FIFA Rankings published two months ago, Nigeria dropped from its 38th position to 41st in the World Ranking and was ranked fifth place in Africa.
Recall that the Super Eagles were the first African side to qualify for the 2018 Russia World Cup and only recently humiliated the Argentine national team in a Grade A international friendly by 4 goals to 2.
While Nigeria was expected to have a better ranking as against the 41st position it got the last time, countries like Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, and even Cameroon that have not fared better since their Continental triumph still ranked above Nigeria in the latest release from FIFA.
The ranking by the World’s Football Governing Body identified the top five teams in Africa as; Senegal, Tunisia, Egypt, Congo DR, Morrocco, which makes Nigeria the only qualified team not among the top 5 of Africa.
The Super Eagles were downgraded due to their last qualifying rounds matchup results against Algeria that ended in a 1-1 stalemate. The Algerians were 26 spots behind Nigeria in the FIFA World Ranking, and a better performance was expected from the Nigerian side.
