The lawmaker representing Kaduna Central senatorial district, Senator Shehu Sani on Tuesday described as wrong the move by the Federal Government to close Nigeria’s border with an unidentified country as a result of rice smuggling.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh announced that the government will be shutting the nation’s border in a few days time so as to curb the menace of rice smuggling.
The minister said that a neighbouring country was bent on destroying the economy of the country and discouraging local production of rice, hence the need to shut down the border.
Reacting to the news through his Twitter handle, Shehu Sani wrote; “It’s wrong to shut down the land borders ‘because of rice smuggling’.
“Our layers of security operatives should be able to combat or prevent smuggling without suffocating legitimate businesses and stifling border communities,” Sani added.
