The United States, U.S president, Mr. Donald Trump has sacked the Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, replacing him with the director of the CIA, Mike Pompeo.
Just on Monday, March 12, Tillerson visited Nigeria on the last leg of his official visits to Africa, being the first high-ranking official under the Trump administration to do so.
He met President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja during the visit, where they discussed issues of mutual interest to both countries.
The ex-Secretary of State had also warned Nigeria and the rest of Africa against accessing financial assistant from China.
Thanking Tillerson for his service on Twitter, Trump said the new state secretary would do “a fantastic job”. His tweet read, “Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!”
Meanwhile, the U.S Undersecretary of State, Steve Goldstein has revealed that outgoing US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson did not speak to President Donald Trump before he was sacked Tuesday and has not been given a reason for his ouster.
“The secretary did not speak to the president this morning and is unaware of the reason, but he is grateful for the opportunity to serve, and still believes strongly that public service is a noble calling and not to be regretted.
“We wish Secretary-Designate Pompeo well,” the top aide added, in a series of tweets from his official account.
Speaking with reporters outside the White House on Tuesday, Trump explained that his differences with Mr Tillerson came down to personal “chemistry”.
He said, “We got along actually quite well, but we disagreed on things.
“When you look at the Iran deal, I think it’s terrible. I guess he thought it was OK.
“I wanted to either break it or do something and he felt a little bit differently, so we were not really thinking the same.”
